Exploring Our Relational Patterns Through Sound

February 23, 2025

“The fact that so many different cultures throughout human history have found shamanic techniques useful and relevant suggests that the holotropic states engage what the anthropologists call the ‘primal mind,’ a basic and primordial aspect of the human psyche that transcends race, gender, culture, and historical period.”
― Stanislav Grof,
The Way of the Psychonaut Volume One: Encyclopedia for Inner Journeys

Today, there are numerous creative pathways to explore universal concepts that help shift our physiology and vibration from states of fear into those of safety and connection. Whether through parts work, somatic practices, touch, breathwork, or plant medicine, the call to turn inward is growing stronger as society continues to ask deeper questions about life and seek innovative solutions to today’s challenges.

Through my studies of ancient principles and modern somatic methods, I’ve come to understand a truth shared by pioneers like Peter Levine and Stanislav Grof, modern psychological paradigms are often too narrow to fully encompass the complexity of the human experience. With this realization comes a deeper awareness of our innate hardwiring and profound capacity for self-healing—abilities far greater than we’ve acknowledged thus far.

As advancements in technology, sound, and psychedelic medicine propel us toward the next era of human potential, we are called to honor and integrate the ancient wisdom embedded within many of today’s modern treatment approaches.

Core Principles of Healing and Integration

  • Mindfulness – The capacity to observe without judgment.
  • Respect for Defenses – Honoring the wisdom of the mechanisms that protect the psyche.
  • Unity – Understanding the interconnectedness of all life forms.
  • Organicity – Trusting that, under the right conditions, the human system knows how to self-heal.
  • Mind-Body Integration – Recognizing that mind and body function as a unified system, each influencing the other.

Today, I would add another understanding: human consciousness extends beyond our five senses. Transcendent experiences and access to inner divinity are not exclusive to mystics and yogis of the past—they are accessible and sustainable through integrative frameworks that guide us inward, through the body.

“Cellular consciousness is awakening the cells to themselves, which the brain cannot do.”
— Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen

I developed Transformative Harmonics™ after years of teaching at the Embodied Recovery Institute, where I studied under Rachel Lewis and her integrative framework incorporating BodyMind Centering. A foundational aspect of our coursework was exploring Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen’s research on neurocellular movement patterns and the relational cycle.

In her book, The Basic Neurocellular Patterns (BNP), Cohen suggests that these fundamental movement patterns profoundly influence our physical, emotional, and cognitive functions. The movements of yield, push, reach, grasp, and pull shape how we bond, defend ourselves, learn, organize, and relate to both others and the world. Understanding ourselves through developmental movement patterns and the corresponding relational cycle allows us to explore our relationship with processes such as:

  • Safe embodiment
  • Receptivity in relationships
  • Attuned presence
  • A relaxed digestive process
  • Internal clarity (interoception)
  • Effective expression of needs
  • Intimacy and connection
  • Foundational trust

The Power of Sound as a Portal for Healing

“The renaissance of interest in Eastern spiritual philosophies, various mystical traditions, meditation, ancient and aboriginal wisdom, as well as the widespread psychedelic experimentation during the stormy 1960s, made it absolutely clear that a comprehensive and cross-culturally valid psychology had to include observations from such areas as mystical states; cosmic conscious
― Stanislav Grof

The auditory sense, being one of the earliest to develop in utero, naturally serves as a profound portal into our neurological processes. Sound can "lubricate" neural pathways, allowing greater access to new insights and deeper awareness of movement patterns rooted in the psyche.

The integration of modern technology and ancient perspectives has shown me that sound can act as a carrier of consciousness and a grounded tool for catalyzing change around these neurocellular movement principles. Through sound, we can enter deep parasympathetic states, journey into the subconscious, and access profound insights about our experiences and come to a deeper understanding about how they influence our relational interactions.

When combined with an understanding of using sound healing as an ancient form of journeying, sound can be used to induce what Stan Grof refers to as holotropic states—states that open the door to perinatal experiences and the mystical or transcendent realms.

Introducing: The Unified Self, Audio Series

In my upcoming blog series, I’ll guide readers through Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen’s Basic Neurocellular Patterns while introducing my new audio program, The Unified Self. This five-week sound-shamanic journey is designed for individuals eager to blend ancient wisdom and modern science through embodied sound explorations that invite connection and exploration of the neurocellular movements. Each curated experience will support inner clarity, healing, and embodied exploration of Bonnie’s fundamental movement patterns while also inviting the listener to connect more deeply to their inner guidance, wisdom, and spirituality to access clarity, gain insight, and break free from limiting patterns. If you are interested in learning more about the modern use of sound technology for inner journeying and transformation, visit Transformative Harmonics™ at www.paulascatoloni.com.

Join me in my new 3 or 4 week series of sound alchemy as we engage in shamanic-sound journeying for deep and transformative healing for the body, mind, and spirit.
