What If Music Is the Language of the Soul?

In my world, sound is audible light and light is visible sound.

What if music is the soul’s language, a subtle, poetic frequency through which the soul communicates across dimensions?

I began to ask, can we explore the soul’s journey through music - not as metaphor, but as direct experience?

Just as the plant in a plant medicine ceremony serves as a carrier wave for spirit and guidance, could music be the carrier wave through which the soul speaks?

The Story of the Songs

Within each of us is a living field of energy called the soul - the archetypal, eternal aspect of your being that is connected to all life. It speaks to us through our emotions and is often a connecting thread and vehicle for those who are called to the arts.

I first began to hear the songs in 2020.

A single phrase or line would filter into my awareness as I sat in embodied presence, during a listening lab or Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) group experience that I was facilitating. At the time, I had no framework for the information. It was simply a way I held space intuitively, staying open to what arose and offering playlists to the group with openness and curiosity.

As I listened more deeply, I noticed that the lyrics - from Elton John, The Beatles, James Taylor, John Denver, and Cat Stevens - carried something more than nostalgia or personal sentiment. They were sharing a story.
In the months that followed, I became more curious. I began keeping lists, tracking the songs that returned again and again. Songs about love, longing, regret, grief. Slowly, I began to sense that the songs were speaking to us, transmitting something essential, if we had the ears and somatic awareness to hear and feel it.

More musical artists emerged, and the themes expanded and grew clearer: divorce, reconciliation, heartbreak, and the return to love. They spoke of the sacred effort to heal the wounds of the inner child and ancestral imprints often evoking tears of grief or moments of deep insight. I noticed archetypal patterns emerging within the music as well:

  • Some playlists revealed the voice of the wounded inner masculine, expressing longing, despair, anger, and uncertainty.
  • Some playlists held the wounds of the archetypal feminine, expressing frustration, resentment, shame, dis-ease, and stagnation.

Eventually, as I moved out of the world of social work and into the world of energy and sound healing, I realized that these were not just songs. They were transmissions.

As my understanding of morphic resonance and the morphic field expanded, I also came across the work of Ann Baring and of Richard Rudd, expanding my understanding of these primary primordial archetypes. Finally, I pieced together my understanding of the songs as powerful activators of our archetypal shadows through Gene Key 22. This Gene key speaks to us about humanities core wounds. For myself, the shadow is the reflection of the core wounds that are held in our inner child and passed down through the generations. I began to see that words were a frequency seeing lyrics similar to tuning forks that can shift our emotional state, tune us to a deeper truth, and move us beyond the constraints of our egoic structures.

In my practice applying Biofield Tuning®, I’ve witnessed how tones and frequencies invoke deep emotional release and nervous system regulation. I also hear songs during a Biofield Tuning session which further peeked my curiosity. I began to understand how music works through similar principles:

  • Meeting an emotion in neutrality
  • Inviting the opposite emotional frequency
  • Amplifying the current emotion to bring it to completion

To my delight, these principles are also found in somatic-based therapy. In that moment, music became a healing modality for me, a way to meet what is stored in the body and psyche, and offer it resonance, coherence, and release. These energetic transmissions are now part of the services that I bring to individuals and groups.

A Deeper Look into A Sound Journey Experience

A sound journey is a living transmission through sound or light offering us a doorway back to the soul towards our prime essence. It is an ancient practice and one that is emerging today as we remember where we came from and who we are. In the book, Sound Medicine, by Dr. Kulreet Chaudray, refers to the use of sound and light as an ancient science seen through the lens of quantum physics.

In a session with me you are invited to connect with your soul essence - the timeless part of you that exists beyond the boundaries of the physical through the doorway of the “akash” or the soul’s database.

We then enter into ceremony, inviting in the ancestors and the elemental forces - Earth, Fire, Water, Air, and Aether. We invite the spirit of Gaia to be present, honoring the organic intelligence that lives within you.

Together, we create a space for your inner guidance to emerge - what I refer to as your embodied wisdom. In Internal Family Systems, this is often called “Self” energy that is within and around you. In Somatic Experiencing, we refer to this as connecting to the morphic field or the larger field of consciousness.

As the journey begins, you enter a state that can feel similar to our in-between states of awake and sleep. You may find yourself moving between worlds, seeing images, or feeling somatic reactions or emotions. Or, you may simply feel held, grounded, and deeply restored.

No matter how it unfolds, this is a state of deep transformation and healing - a calling home of all the parts of you that have been waiting to return to unconditional love. The byproduct of this type of inner journey can include an emotional or physical detox as the body sheds the layers of conditioning and emotions that you have carried with you up to this point.

The acoustic playlist is then given to you to use over a two-week period as the layers of conditioning continue to thaw and you slowly move into a new alignment with your true self. Lastly, this unfolding often involves a deep de-conditioning of your beliefs and inner frameworks that have held your identity in place up to this point, so the process itself takes time and patience.

Testimonial

"Over the past 15 years, I’ve experienced many sound healing sessions - but none as profound as this. Using nostalgic songs from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, Paula channels exactly what your soul needs to hear to initiate deep emotional release and core wound healing.

The session brought me to a place of raw vulnerability I’d never felt before. Listening to the recorded playlist continued to move me to tears each time. This work isn't just about personal healing - it's about unraveling the collective wound. As we face our inherited pain, we’re invited to break open rather than break down. Paula’s sessions help facilitate that sacred process."
